Bring a trustee
Leave with a book

Librarians who bring a trustee to hear Janet Jai-- the WVLA Conference Spotlight Speaker for Thursday, October 6th--will not only receive valuable information, you will get to leave with a copy of her book.  Saving Our Public Libraries - Why We Should - How We Can will make a nice companion piece to the information you will take home from this break out session. See a WVLC staff member upon exiting the session.

Typical Week Count

So important, it bears repeating--the Typical Week Count is conducted the third week in October.  You can complete the form in Excel and save it to your computer for next year's Bibliostat.

FTAS needs your input

To date, only 8% of West Virginia libraries have submitted surveys for the Funding and Technology Access Study. This survey is very important for future funding possibilities. Please take a few minutes and do your part.

Continuing Education

Turning the Page 2.0
Week of Oct. 31-week of Dec. 12

Turning the Page 2.0 advocacy training course is a unique program of blended learning, beginning with a free, optional preconference at a regional conference, then transitioning into a facilitated, online six-week course comprised of weekly webinars and independent work. This free program is open to any interested library staff member or supporter--there is no limit to the number of attendees per library so you are encouraged to invite trustees, Friends, and others to help create your advocacy team.

Click here for more details about Turning the Page 2.0. If you have any questions, please email ttp2@ala.org. Turning the Page 2.0 is developed and presented by the Public Library Association with generous support from The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Collaborative Summer Library Program workshops

Dream big, READ! logo

Plan now to attend a Collaborative Summer Library Program workshop in your area. Each workshop begins at 1:00 PM and ends around 4:00 PM.  The CSLP workshop qualifies for three hours of Continuing Education credit.

Join us and bring ideas to share. What did you do last year that was successful, or not? Do you have and ideas or programs for this year? It doesn’t have to be elaborate.

Our Authors, Our Advocates

Our Authors, Our Advocates: Authors Speak Out for Libraries, enlisted well-known authors from around the nation to become articulate and powerful spokespeople for libraries. Now libraries are invited to embed these ALA public service announcements on local websites.  In addition, libraries have access to a web resource, entitled "Cultivating Your Local Notables toolkit,"  which allows library supporters to do the same advocacy at the local level.

October events to celebrate

National Friends of Libraries Week
October 16-22

National Friends of Libraries Week is the perfect time to thank your Friends group for their help throughout the year.  Need Friends?

Teen Read Week 2011
Picture It @ your library
October 16-22

Teen Read Week encourages teens to read graphic novels and other illustrated materials, seek out creative books, or imagine the world through literature, just for the fun of it.  With so many available diversions, the enjoyment of a good book remains free at their local library.

Anytime your library hosts an event, please send us your comments and post your photographs on our flikr.com page.
